What is ASCII?

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a character encoding standard that assigns a number from 0 to 127 to English letters, digits, punctuation and a handful of control signals. It's the foundation that Unicode later extended to cover every writing system.

What's the difference between decimal, hex and binary here?

They're the same number written three different ways. The letter A is decimal 65, hex 41, and binary 01000001 — a computer, a web page and a keyboard Alt code just prefer different number bases for the same underlying value.

Why do some rows show [NUL], [ESC] and similar labels instead of a character?

Codes 0–31 and 127 are control characters — signals like "tab," "line feed" or "escape" rather than printable symbols, so there's no glyph to show. Toggle "Show control characters" to see them.

Where's the ASCII code for a heart, star or checkmark?

Those aren't in the original 128-character ASCII set — they're Unicode characters defined well outside ASCII's range. See the dedicated symbol pages linked below for each one, with its exact Unicode code point.

How do I convert hex to ASCII (text)?

Use the hex converter above — paste space-separated hex pairs like "48 65 6c 6c 6f" and switch direction to get the text back. Each pair is just the decimal ASCII code for that character written in base 16 instead of base 10.

What about extended ASCII (codes 128–255)?

"Extended ASCII" isn't one fixed standard — different code pages (like Windows-1252 or ISO-8859-1) assign different characters to 128–255, so a code in that range means different things on different systems. This table sticks to the original, unambiguous 0–127 range for that reason.
